Motilium is a stimulant of intestinal peristalsis, has an antiemetic effect.

The active substance of Motilium is domperidone, which is characterized by the action of some antipsychotics, but unlike them, it does not cause extrapyramidal side effects (parkinsonism, dystonia, tremor, chorea, athetosis, akathisia, tic, myoclonus, stereotypy). It has also been found that domperidone enhances the release of prolactin (a peptide hormone that stimulates milk production).

Motilium increases tone and pressure on the sphincter of the lower esophagus. The drug has no effect on the production of gastric juice.

Indications for use of Motilium

Contraindications

According to the instructions, Motilium is not used for: perforation of the gastrointestinal tract, its obstruction of a mechanical nature, with a tumor of the pituitary gland that produces prolactin, with gastrointestinal bleeding, with hypersensitivity to the active substance, and excipients of the drug.

According to the indicated indications, Motilium should not be used simultaneously with ketoconazole, erythromycin, voriconazole, fluconazole, amiodarone, clarithromycin, telithromycin.

During lactation, pregnancy, it is not recommended to use the drug.

Instructions for using Motilium

Motilium for children weighing 35 kg and more is prescribed in the form of coated tablets.

According to the indications indicated in the instructions, Motilium sublingual tablets are given only to children after 5 liters, adults.

Suspension Motilium is indicated for children under 5 liters.

Motilium is indicated for dyspeptic disorders, children and adults are taken 15-30 minutes before meals, 10 mg three times a day. The permissible dose is 80 mg / day. Children over 12 yrs, adults are allowed to double the dosage if necessary.

Side effects

Motilium can cause amenorrhea, hyperprolactinemia (a disease in which the level of prolactin rises), gynecomastia, reversible extrapyramidal pathologies in children (disappear after drug withdrawal), gastrointestinal disorder, spastic intestinal contractions, allergic reactions.

In children under one year old, Motilium can cause neurological disorders.

An overdose of the drug can cause disorientation, drowsiness, extrapyramidal disorders (most often occur in children). For the treatment of extrapyramidal disorders, anticholinergic agents, drugs for the treatment of Parkinson's disease can be prescribed. They begin to eliminate the symptoms of an overdose with a gastric lavage procedure.
