Pertussin syrup
Pertussin syrup

Pertussin is a combined herbal-synthetic remedy with an expectorant effect. Less officially, the name of this drug is familiar to us from childhood. There is some kind of light nostalgic flair in it: after all, remember, as soon as we caught some respiratory viral infection, our parents strove to pour a couple of spoons of this syrup into us. Fortunately, there has never been a shortage of this unique development of domestic pharmacists (no other drugs with the same composition can be found) in pharmacies.

Release form and composition of Pertussin

Pertussin is produced in the form of syrup in dark glass vials with a volume of 50 and 100 g. The syrup bottle itself, instructions for Pertussin and a plastic spoon for ease of dosing are placed in a cardboard box. In addition, almost the full text of the instructions for Pertussin for use (fortunately, it is not at all voluminous) is applied to the packaging.

Pertussin contains a liquid extract of thyme or creeping thyme (12 g per 100 g of syrup) and potassium bromide (1 g per 100 g of syrup) as a pharmacologically active component. Sucrose and ethyl alcohol 80% are included as auxiliary substances in Pertussin. And in the composition of Pertussin Ch, 95% ethanol is completely included. (Pertussin Ch is the same Pertussin, except for the concentration of ethanol, no more differences were noticed between them). Judging by the reviews about Pertussin and his almost complete "clone" - there really is no difference between them.

Pertussin's analogs

As already mentioned, Pertussin has no complete analogues. Meanwhile, there are many preparations containing herbal ingredients and having an expectorant effect:

  • Amtersol, syrup (Russia);
  • Herbion, syrup (Slovenia);
  • Dr. Mom, syrup (India);
  • Dr. Theiss, syrup (Germany);
  • Linkas Lor, pastilles (Pakistan);
  • Codelak Broncho, tablets (Russia);
  • Travisil, syrup, tablets, solution, ointment (India).

pharmachologic effect

Thyme herb extract has an expectorant effect, increases the amount of sputum secreted by the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract, promotes its liquefaction and stimulates its fastest evacuation. Potassium bromide, for its part, has a calming effect on the nervous system.

Reviews of Pertussin from several generations of patients at once indicate that this combination is extremely well selected.

Pertussin's indications for use

In accordance with the instructions for Pertussin and the reviews of ENT doctors about him, this syrup works well as one of the components of the complex treatment of acute respiratory diseases, including tracheitis, bronchitis and the disease of our childhood - whooping cough.

Brief instructions for use

Doctors recommend taking Pertussin after meals, as if taken before meals, some deterioration in appetite is possible.

Pertussin should be taken three times a day:

  • adults - 1 tablespoon (15 ml);
  • children from 12 years old - 1 dessert spoon (10 ml);
  • children from 6 to 12 years old - 1-2 teaspoons (5-10 ml);

Contraindications

Contraindications to the use of Pertussin are the following factors:

  • liver disease;
  • alcoholism (remember the ethanol included in the syrup);

  • epilepsy;
  • age up to 3 years;
  • pregnancy and breastfeeding (again, remember this ill-fated ethyl alcohol);
  • chronic heart failure.

Side effect

When using Pertussin, allergies and heartburn are possible.

Special instructions for the use of Pertussin

Pertussin contains ethyl alcohol, which must be taken into account when taking the drug. God knows not how much of it, but nevertheless … In dry language of numbers, this is 0.43 g of alcohol in a teaspoon of syrup.

While on the course of treatment with Pertussin, you should be careful to engage in potentially hazardous activities that put forward increased demands on the speed of reaction, incl. driving a car.

Persons suffering from diabetes mellitus need to carefully select the dosage of the drug because of the sucrose it contains.
